Integrating curiosity, theory, and music production techniques, we’ll co-explore sound as an apparatus of interconnectedness to develop sonic fictional worlds. Investigating methodologies for hacking flow, the course strives to energize creative processes while challenging and critiquing dominant production standards. Focusing on concept, practice, play, and technical skill-sharing, we’ll reimagine how we might approach music as a form of self-expression and a tool for healing and sensing beyond our present reality. Our creative energy can be more than just a balm for precarious and difficult times; by developing a sensitivity to what is, we can dare toward the hopeful vistas of what if.

We’ll share and develop our personal sonic worlds through each step of the creative process:

  ✣ Ideation and conceptual development
✣ Sourcing and creating sonic material
   ✣ Creative Wolrdbuilding Methodology
Me ~ tuning to self/body/immediate surroundings (& deep listening)
We ~ collaboration/pluralization (working together is essential)
De ~ deconstruct/decode/de—
Re ~ reconstruct/recode/re—
✣ Arrangement, composition, and mixing in Ableton
✣ Releasing and sharing music under late-capitalism

About the Instructor
Madelyn (they/them) is a Berlin-based artist and educator investigating connection, home, biophilia, and the adjascent possible, or ‘what if...’ Madelyn believes that stretching and pulling at the uncanny nodes of perception holds the power to conjure psychosocial transformation beyond human-centred perspectives. Madelyn produces, DJs, and performs under their genre-defying moniker Slowfoam. Slowfoam amalgamates a constellation of sound sources ~ electroacoustics, field recording, granulated synthesis, feedback, sound design, drones, and spoken word ~ into a/biotic relects from the aqueous deep.
